Northridge
is a popular area in the northern part of the San Fernando
Valley straddling the 118 freeway. It is also home to
California State University, Northridge. This area also
became very famous, very quickly early one morning in
January 1994 as the Northridge Earthquake rumbled through
town. It was frightening, however, the community stuck
together and most of the damage was repaired to a condition
better than before the earthquake.
There
are a few older parts of Northridge that have housing
in the lower middle end and there is new housing still
being built. The newer area, known as Porter Ranch is
highly desirable and is in the upper-middle to upper
ends. There is a private golf course, Porter Valley
Golf Course, that winds it's way through an older section
of Porter Ranch. Besides golf course views, many of
these homes have canyon or city light views as well.
If it sounds nice, it should. It is very nice.
The
public schools in this area are known as some of the
best in the large Los Angeles Unified School District.
The shopping is also considered excellent as the area
boasts one of the more popular regional shopping malls.
As
mentioned on other Northern Valley areas, there is one
thing we feel we should mention. There is one small
negative thing to consider. The northern part of the
San Fernando Valley has a season of very high winds
known as the Santa Ana's. From late October until January,
there will be days where the winds really howl. It doesn't
bother some people, and it drives others (like us) crazy.
The winds are bad all over the Valley during these conditions,
but especially bad during in the northern part of the
Valley. And, overall, it's not the worst thing that
could happen, but you should be aware they exist.
